Past Life Movie Review

Joy Rieger stars in Past Life

The Price of Creation

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Follow two rebellious Israeli sisters (Joy Rieger & Nelly Tagar) in 1977, as they delve into the dark mystery of their father's life in Poland during World War II. Directed by Avi Nesher.

"Parents ate sour grapes, and the children have rotten teeth." The past returns to haunt sisters Nana and Sephi in Nesher's compelling Past Life. The film has multiple layers (synonymous with a good mystery) but nothing trumps the superb performances of Rieger and Tagar... particularly the former, who (somewhat ironically) takes over investigative duties from her journalist sister, a "walking polygraph," who "hates secrets." The secrets are many, and unravel against a dazzling soundtrack that only adds to the suspense. Nana declares, "In tragedy, you can't escape fate." Sometimes it takes tragedy to find (and resolve) it.

Grade: B+
