GW Men’s Basketball Signs Javier Langarica

Colonials go international with signing of Spanish forward

The GW men’s basketball team looks to further a long history of success with international players with the signing of Javier Langarica, a 6-foot-9 forward from Bilbao, Spain. Langarica will join the team as a freshman for the 2017-18 season.

“We are excited about the addition of Javier, who will add to our rich tradition of talented foreign players here at GW,” said head coach Maurice Joseph. “His skill set and versatility will be an asset to our frontcourt depth and his international playing experience will help him acclimate to the college game. Recruiting internationally is a major cornerstone of our philosophy, so we are thrilled to welcome Javier to Foggy Bottom.”

Langarica has displayed a versatile skill-set the past two seasons for Unamuno U-18 and Senior Team, a club team based out of his hometown of Bilbao. With his 6-foot-9 frame, he showed his touch from outside by shooting 46.2 percent from three-point range last season. In his last six games with Unamuno, he averaged 23.3 points and 13.6 rebounds in 32 minutes per game.

“I feel like I’m making a dream come true by going to GW,” said Langarica. “I think it is exactly what I was looking for, a university at a high basketball and academic level. I have the opportunity to receive a good education while I continue playing basketball, so I’ll give the best of me to keep improving and help the team.”

Langarica will be the third player from outside the continental United States on GW’s roster this coming season, joining senior guard Yuta Watanabe (Japan) and sophomore forward Arnaldo Toro (Puerto Rico.) He’s the first Spanish player to join GW’s roster since Antxon Iturbe, who suited up for the Colonials from 1997-2001.
