Jake Gyllenhaal stars in Life

Calvin Could

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Life tells the story of the six-member crew of the International Space Station that is on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As the crew begins to conduct research, their methods end up having unintended consequences and the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected. Directed by Daniel Espinosa.

"We've been waiting a long time for this sample." Good (and very bad) things come to those who wait in Espinosa's electrifying Life. Aside from its obvious similarities to Alien (and countless copycats) this movie is near-perfect. It has action, bonafide star power, humor (including a Re-Animator reference) and tons of tension. Espinosa knows how to set a blazing pace (Safe House) while creating just enough back story to reel you in. The cast is accomplished, diverse and likable; and the special effects are on par with Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, despite a sub $60 million budget. Lofty praise, and well-deserved.

Grade: B+
