Rings Movie Review

Matilda Lutz stars in Rings

(Go Ahead and) Watch Me

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: A new chapter in the beloved RING horror franchise. A young woman (Matilda Lutz) becomes worried about her boyfriend (Alex Roe) when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend, and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a "movie within the movie" that no one has ever seen before...

"I can help you... but I need to show you something first." Famous last words; but to my surprise, F. Javier GutiĆ©rrez's Rings is a pretty good movie. Whether it's scary or not, is up to you. Me? I didn't flinch once (chalk that up to sequelitis) but after an 11-year hiatus, I was genuinely happy to see antagonist Samara again (in all her wetness.) Lutz delivers a Saturn Award-worthy starring turn; and there are a few familiar faces (Vincent D'Onofrio, Johnny Galecki) to appeal to mainstream audiences. Light on thrills, but not too long (102 minutes) and plenty entertaining.

Grade: B-
