Sing Movie Review

Seth MacFarlane voices Mike in Sing

Places Everyone!

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: A koala impresario (Matthew McConaughey) stages a grand singing competition for the world's animals in order to save his elegant theater in this quirky animated musical. Directed by Garth Jennings.

Jennings' Sing promises an animated version of American Idol (I actually chose to see it over Fences & Passengers) but plays it (too) safe, settling for a well-animated but generic holiday option (for kids only.) McConaughey warns early on, "Wonder and magic don't come easy," and he's right. The characters are random, and I had trouble matching any of them to their celebrity voices (Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon... who knew?) To its' credit, there's lots (and lots) of music; so odds are, youngsters will be sufficiently distracted, but don't expect much in terms of humor/story. Best seen on TV.

Grade: C-
