Sully Movie Review

Aaron Eckhart & Tom Hanks (r) star in Sully

Blowback

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Tom Hanks stars in this thrilling portrait of heroic airline pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, re-enacting his incredible successful emergency landing of an Airbus A320 full of passengers on the Hudson River. Directed by Clint Eastwood. Also stars Aaron Eckhart and Laura Linney.

Linney pleads, "Please tell me it's over." Sorry Laura, no such luck. Sully crashes on impact (early and often) turning 208 seconds of real-life drama into 96 minutes of boredom. How did Eastwood muck it up? Let's start with a nonlinear narrative, which strips the film of any suspense, and a cattle call of poor performances opposite Hanks' good (not great) titular turn. Instead of building up to an exciting airplane crash, Eastwood drowns his audience in a river of coma-inducing phone calls and midnight jogs. Perhaps it's time to retire; or better yet, stream the far superior Flight online.
