Colonials Open 2016 Campaign on Friday at Cavalier Classic

The George Washington volleyball team picked up one first-place vote and totaled 72 total points to rank third out of 10 teams in the annual Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll. The poll was conducted among the conference's head coaches.

Defending champion Dayton and conference runner-up Saint Louis finished in a tie for first place with 83 points. The Flyers, winners of two A-10 titles in a row and six of the last seven, garnered six first-place votes. Saint Louis, who will host the 2016 A-10 Championship at Chaifetz Pavilion, earned three first-place votes.

GW finished ahead of Rhode Island (65 points), Duquesne (46), VCU (44), Davidson (39), George Mason (28), Fordham (20) and La Salle (14.)

GW is coming off its second consecutive 20-win season (21-11) in 2015 and its third straight appearance in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Colonials return nine letterwinners and welcome five newcomers in 2016 as the program aims to win its first conference title since 2000.

GW opens the regular season on Friday at the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Colonials will play a doubleheader on Friday against Northwestern (2:00 PM) and Virginia (7:00 PM) before concluding the tournament on Saturday against Buffalo (4:00 PM.)
