Union Market to Host Harper Macaw #VoteChocolate Pop-Up Until July 17

From our friends at Union Market...

Union Market to Host Harper Macaw #VoteChocolate pop-up in Collaboration with Design Army

With the Democratic and Republican conventions right around the corner, it’s time to show off your true political spirit - with chocolate! Union Market is hosting a pop-up chocolate shop through July 17 in collaboration with premier Washington DC-based chocolatier Harper Macaw and graphic design agency Design Army. At the #VoteChocolate pop-up, guests will enjoy Harper Macaw’s partisan (and non-partisan) chocolate and get the chance to vote for their favorite flavors. The aptly named bars fit every political party, and everything in between - from the Flip-Flopper, Filibuster, Left Wing, Red State, and even our nation’s capital: Taxation without Representation.

When asked “why chocolate?,” Harper Macaw founder Colin Hartman responded, “Our focus goes beyond manufacturing professional grade fine chocolate; our objective is to demonstrate that cocoa and chocolate - historically an environmentally and socially destructive industry - can become a force for tropical reforestation through the use of ecologically sound and economically sustainable agroforestry systems."

Harper Macaw is a DC startup founded by husband and wife team Colin and Sarah Hartman, who wanted to pair their love of chocolate with rainforest protection efforts in Brazil. While Colin spent time in the Marines and studied business at the University of Pennsylvania, Sarah studied the confectionary processes and details behind the chocolate trade. They chose to settle in DC because of the city’s booming food scene and “friendly, beautiful, and livable” vibe. A portion of all chocolate proceeds go to rainforest conservation efforts in Brazil’s Amazon and Atlantic rainforests.

“We wanted to do a political series where each bar represents different things, whether it’s a political party, phrase, or issue,” says Pum Lefebure, co-founder and CCO of Design Army. “Maybe it’s a left-wing bar full of nuts, or a red state bar that plays with something red. It’s all in good fun.”

The #VoteChocolate pop-up will be open from 11 AM - 7 PM Thursday and Friday, 10 AM - 6 PM Saturday and 10 AM - 4 PM Sunday.
