So much for upsets. The top
eight seeded men were victorious at yesterday's
Citi Open, led by
John Isner and
Gaël Monfils, who breezed to straight set wins on Stadium Court. Isner ended qualifier
James Duckworth's impressive run with a 6-3, 6-4 victory, after Monfils' 6-3, 6-2 romp over China's
Yen-Hsun Lu.
Bernard Tomic,
Benoît Paire and
Steve Johnson also advanced; but #9 seed
Kevin Anderson was upset by Tunisia's
Malek Jaziri in a three-set thriller on Grandstand 1, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(3.)
On the women's side, top seed
Samantha Stosur advanced to the second round after former world #1
Caroline Wozniacki retired due to injury (left arm.) Wozniacki was ahead 7-5, 3-4, but couldn't continue after having her serve broken in the second set. What a shame. Isner headlines today's star-studded card, facing off against
Marcos Baghdatis on Stadium Court (not before 5:00 PM.) If you fancy a better/closer view, head over to Grandstand 1 for a juicy matchup between #3 seed Tomic and big-serving
Ivo Karlović (not before 4:00 PM.)
