The
Citi Open had its (un)fair share of bad news in the last 24 hours. The #1 men's seed
Tomáš Berdych withdrew (fatigue) as did three-time tournament champion
Juan Martín del Potro (wrist) and the Bryan Brothers. Not a great way to start; but after today's stirring first round of qualifying, I'm ready to declare "all is forgiven." Sure it was hot (isn't it always?) but the play was even hotter. Winners included (on the men's side) Aussies
Matthew Barton &
James Duckworth, and the top three seeded women's qualifiers including world #153
Lin Zhu, who topped American
Jennifer Elie 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 on Center Court.

Play resumes tomorrow at 10 AM with the final day of qualifying. The ATP & WTA main draws gets underway on Monday at 2 PM.
