Weiner Movie Review

The Honorable Anthony Weiner

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Former U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner's catastrophic race for Mayor of New York City in 2013 is detailed in this behind-the-scenes documentary. Weiner became embroiled in his second widely publicized sexting scandal during the race, derailing his once-promising political career. Weiner is directed by Josh Kriegman & Elyse Steinberg, and received its world premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

Like him or not (most don't) Anthony Weiner is entertaining; so it's only fitting that his documentary would be too, perhaps even more so. Throughout the doc's crisp 96-minute runtime, Weiner's referred to as a glib narcissist, loser, punchline, scumbag and my personal favorite/self-titled Carlos Danger, the alias that got him into so much trouble (the second time around.) It's hard impossible not to feel sorry for his wife (Huma Abedin) who confesses, "It's like living a nightmare," but how often does a high-profile politician grant this kind of access? Equal parts cringe-worthy, provocative and transparent... An absolute must-see.

Grade: A
