Awesome Con Announces Full Schedule of Events and Appearances

Diverse programming fills the Walter E. Washington Convention Center June 3-5

Awesome ConDC’s three-day pop culture convention, is proud to announce their full weekend lineup of programming including guests like Kevin Smith, John Barrowman, the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Peter Capaldi. Panels will cover topics from the role of Diversity in the Cosplay Community to Kickstarter: Dos and Don’ts for creators, and performances like Whose Roll is it Anyway? and the Eugene Mirman Comedy Show will entertain Awesome Con attendees of all ages. Guests can bring their cosplay best at costume contests, fandom get-togethers, and more, showcasing their creativity all weekend long.

Diversity in the Cosplay Community
June 3rd, 5:00 - 6:00 PM, Room 143
This is an open forum to discuss experiences and problems that arise within the cosplay community for people of color in an effort to find solutions. Our group of panelists come from all walks of nerdom and provide their unique experiences to set the tone.  This panel is for everyone and is meant to be a safe space to discuss ways to make our amazing community even better. Rated: PG-13

An Evening with Kevin Smith
June 3rd, 7:00 - 9:00 PM, Hall D
Kevin Smith will present his An Evening with Kevin Smith, a night of stories, musings, and Q&A, beginning at 7 PM. An Evening with Kevin Smith has been performed to standing room audiences around America, and we’re excited now to bring Kevin Smith to DC. An Evening with Kevin Smith is a ticketed event - Premium Tickets (which include a pre-signed autograph from Kevin) are $75 and General Admission is $15. Rated: R

Kickstarter: Dos & Don’ts

Kickstarter has been proven to be a wonderful platform in helping creators get their projects off the ground.  Join our panelists who have each launched successful Kickstarter campaigns as they talk about their first-hand experiences.  Creators for this panel include Rafer Roberts (Creator of Nightmare the Rat and author of Valiant Comics’ The Adventures of Archer & Armstrong), Carolyn Belefski (CURLS) and Arsia Rozegar (Shahnameh for Kids). Rated: G / Panelists: Rafer Roberts, Carolyn Belefski, Arsia Rozegar.

Whose Roll Is It Anyway?

Do you like improv? Do you like Dungeons and Dragons? Then you need to come see this group of idiots try to mash the two together! Witness a live roleplaying game where the players and even the Dungeon Master are at the mercy of the audience. You help us create the monsters, the spells, the loot, even the NPC’s dialogue, then watch the madness unfold. A few of you will even get the chance to come up on stage with us and join in on the adventure! No one is safe. Dice will roll. Hilarity will ensue. Rated: R

Eugene Mirman Comedy Show
June 4th, 8:00 - 9:30 PM, Room 152
Spend your Saturday night with Eugene Mirman. Before co-hosting StarTalk Live on Sunday with Bill Nye, Mirman will host a special live comedy show on Saturday just for Awesome Con attendees. Mirman is a Brooklyn-based comedian and actor most known as the voice of Gene on Fox’s “Bob’s Burgers.” He’s also been featured on “Flight of the Conchords,” Adult Swim’s “Delocated,” and has had two comedy specials on Comedy Central - with his latest comedy special now available on Netflix. He’s the co-founder of NYC’s Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival, going into its 9th year. Eugene Mirman‘s Awesome Con comedy show is at 8 PM on Saturday, June 4. General seating is $15, and preferred seating - which also includes an autograph session, Mirman‘s 9-volume “I’m Sorry (You’re Welcome)” comedy LP, and a digital download of “I’m Sorry (You’re Welcome)” - is $65. Rated: 18+ *Please bring valid ID to be checked at the door.

From bathrobe Jedi to professional Princess Serenity gowns, watch as Awesome Con attendees take part in the Saturday Costume Contest sponsored by McCall’s. This costume contest is open to creators of all ages.

John Barrowman
June 4th & 5th
John can currently be seen in the regular role of Malcolm Merlyn (aka The Dark Archer) in the hit American drama series Arrow, based on the Green Arrow comic books. The show has been a huge success all over the world, and is aired in the UK on Sky 1 and on the CW network in the USA. He has appeared in all four series of the show. He subsequently guested as Malcolm Merlyn in The Flash, and has also guested on the CW’s hit historical drama Reign.

Peter Capaldi
June 5th
Peter Capaldi is a Scottish actor, writer and director. He has played numerous roles in film and television including Malcolm Tucker, a spin doctor in the BBC comedy series The Thick of It and its film spinoff In the Loop. He is best known for being the twelfth and current actor to play the title role in the long-running BBC One sci-fi series Doctor Who. As a director, he won the 1995 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for his short film, Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life.

StarTalk Live! with Bill Nye the Science Guy and Eugene Mirman

Bill Nye and Eugene Mirman come together for a special taping of StarTalk Live!, inspired by the popular podcast StarTalk. Co-hosts Nye and Mirman will interview scientific leaders and celebrities, stirring up a discussion that bridges science and pop culture with humor and clarity.
