The Confirmation Movie Review

Clive Owen stars in The Confirmation

Let's Go Find Those Tools

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: A down-on-his-luck carpenter (Clive Owen) is forced to take care of his estranged eight-year-old son (Jaeden Lieberher) while his ex-wife (Maria Bello) and her new husband (Matthew Modine) attend a religious retreat. When his toolbox is stolen, the two set off on an adventure to find the thieves responsible, and end up bonding in the process. Patton Oswalt co-stars. Written and directed by Bob Nelson.

"(A) boy can't go that long without a falsehood." Anthony (Lieberher) plays the boy in question, who survives a plethora of poor advice in The Confirmation. Lucky for us, Nelson's directorial debut is also filled with good intentions, although the clichés (alcoholism, eviction, perpetual bad luck) weigh heavy throughout. Owen's terrific as a deadbeat dad with a chivalrous side... and Lieberher (St. Vincent, Midnight Special) shines again as a soft-spoken kid in search of his own identity (religious and otherwise.) It probably won't garner much, in terms of commercial success; but the life lessons learned along the way are priceless.

Grade: B
