10 Cloverfield Lane Movie Review

John Gallagher, Jr., Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman (r) star in 10 Cloverfield Lane

Venus, If You Will

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: A young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) wakes up after a terrible accident to find that she's locked in a cellar with a doomsday prepper (John Goodman) who insists that he saved her life, and that the world outside is uninhabitable following an apocalyptic catastrophe. Uncertain what to believe, the woman soon determines that she must escape at any cost. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg. Also stars John Gallagher Jr.

I "visited" 10 Cloverfield Lane spoiler-free (no trailer, nada) and highly recommend you do the same (my review's safe, I promise.) Most of the film takes place in a bunker; but don't let the tight confines fool you... Trachtenberg's directorial debut is packed with chills, thrills and misdirection. Goodman's terrific as a kooky "black belt in conspiracy theory," who rules his roost with a firm grip; while Winstead provides sparks aplenty as his reluctant/spunky house "guest." I didn't like the ending (anti-climatic, borderline ludicrous) but 10-15 minutes of daftness isn't enough to usurp an otherwise clever, compelling movie.

Grade: B
