GW Gymnastics Tops EAGL Preseason Poll

From our friends at GW Athletics...

Colonials Open 2016 Campaign on January 9th

The George Washington gymnastics team was tabbed as the top team in the 2016 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Preseason Poll, in a vote conducted among the league's head coaches.

GW, coming off its first-ever EAGL Championship in 2015 and its first NCAA Regionals appearance since 2002, garnered 31 total points, including three first-place votes, to narrowly edge out second place North Carolina State (30 points, three first-place votes). New Hampshire was picked third with 27 points, followed by Pittsburgh (18), Towson (12) and North Carolina (8.)

The Colonials will return 13 letterwinners in 2016, including the program's first-ever All-American student-athlete in Cami Drouin-Allaire, who competed at the NCAA National Championship as an individual performer last season.

GW also welcomes back the EAGL Rookie of the Year from each of the past two seasons in sophomore Jillian Winstanley and junior Chelsea Raineri along with three All-EAGL selections in sophomore Sara Mermelstein (2nd Team, Balance Beam), junior Alex DeMoura (2nd Team, Vault, Floor Exercise, All-Around) and sophomore Liz Pfeiler (1st Team, Balance Beam.)

Head Coach Margie Foster-Cunningham enters her 31st season at the helm of the program in 2016.

She was named the NCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year last season after leading the Colonials to the EAGL Championship and an appearance at the NCAA Auburn Regional, where the Colonials produced four podium appearances across four events and the all-around, the most by a single team in GW's NCAA Regionals history.

GW will open its 2016 campaign at the Little Boston Invitational on January 9 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Colonials will face off against EAGL rival New Hampshire and Rutgers.
