Montgomery College's Visual and Performing Arts Department at Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus Presents Waiting for Lefty

Montgomery College’s Visual and Performing Arts Department presents Waiting for Lefty. The college will hold six performances over two weekends, November 6 through 15, in the Cultural Arts Center’s Theater 2. Directed by Professor David Rothman, Waiting for Lefty is one of the most celebrated and significant plays of modern American theater.

Waiting for Lefty, by Clifford Odets, takes place in the Great Depression. It deals with the cynical exploitation of the working classes. The play was first presented by the famous Group Theatre. Waiting for Lefty became a symbol of its time and a beacon for many soon-to-be-famous playwrights who came under its influence. According to Paddy Chayefsky, “There isn't a writer of my generation, especially a New York writer, who doesn't owe his very breath (his entire attitude toward theatre) to Odets.”

In the opening scene, a union leader tries to convince a committee of workers not to strike. The workers know the union leader is in the pay of the bosses, and are waiting for their leader Lefty to arrive. What follows is a series of episodes that blend into a powerful and stirring mosaic. The play culminates in tragic news that unites the workers.

Montgomery College students and community members will perform Waiting for Lefty under the direction of Professor David Rothman. According to the director, Waiting for Lefty “still resonates with its message of individuals joining together to fight for a better way of life.”
