Colonials to Host Five Home Meets at the Charles E. Smith Center

The George Washington gymnastics team will host five home meets at the Charles E. Smith Center as part of its 12-meet regular-season schedule, head coach Margie Foster-Cunningham has announced.

For just the second time since 2005, the Colonials will open their 2016 campaign on the road at the Little Boston Invitational on January 9, held in the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center in Boston, Massachusetts. GW will compete with East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) rival New Hampshire and Rutgers in the season-opening event.

The Colonials will kick off the home portion of their schedule by hosting the ninth annual Lindsey Ferris Invitational on January 17. GW has won the event in each of the past three seasons and will shoot for four in a row against North Carolina, Cornell, Penn and Temple.

GW opens a run of four consecutive road meets on January 23 with a quad meet at Pittsburgh’s Fitzgerald Field House, site of the 2016 EAGL Championship. The Colonials will compete against the host Panthers, New Hampshire and Temple in their first road meet of the season.

The following week, GW visits EAGL rival North Carolina for a dual meet in Chapel Hill, N.C., (Jan. 30) before traveling west for a tri-meet at Kent State (Feb. 7) against the host Golden Flashes and Northern Illinois.

GW concludes the road swing at the previously announced Perfect 10 Challenge in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Colonials will compete against Oklahoma, Utah State and Denver in the nationally-televised event.

The Perfect 10 Challenge is one of the marquee events of the Bart and Nadia Sports Experience, which includes a variety of sports activities and events centered around the Nadia Comaneci International Invitational.

The Colonials return home to the Smith Center to host a quad meet against North Carolina, New Hampshire and William & Mary on February 19.

GW returns to the SECU Center in Towson, Maryland, site of its 2015 EAGL Championship victory, for a quad meet with Towson, NC State and William & Mary on February 19 before returning home for consecutive matches at the Smith Center.

First up is a tri-meet with Maryland and Towson (Feb. 28) before a dual meet with North Carolina State (March 4.)

The Colonials will make the short trip to College Park, Maryland, for their final road meet of the regular season, a quad meet with Maryland, Pittsburgh and Texas Woman’s University.

GW wraps up the regular season with a tri meet on March 13 against Kent State and Yale at the Smith Center.

The EAGL Championship will be held at Pittsburgh’s Fitzgerald Field House on Saturday, March 19.

GW returns 13 letterwinners from last year’s EAGL Championship squad, including NACGC/W Second Team All-American and NCAA National Championship individual qualifier Cami Drouin-Allaire, EAGL Rookie of the Year Jillian Winstanley and EAGL First Team selection (vault, floor exercise) Chelsea Raineri.

The Colonials are aiming to win their second consecutive EAGL Championship and return to NCAA Regionals. Last season the Colonials tallied four podium appearances at the NCAA Auburn Regional, their first regionals appearance since 2002.
