The Intern Movie Review

Robert De Niro & Anne Hathaway (r) star in The Intern

Back in Action

IMDb Plot: 70-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) has discovered that retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be. Seizing an opportunity to get back in the game, he becomes a senior intern at an online fashion site, founded and run by Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway.) Directed by Nancy Meyers.

Hathaway declares, "I'm glad you see the humor in this." Not so fast Jules: The Intern isn't that funny. It has its moments (De Niro's great, Rene Russo too) and Hathaway's adorable as ever; but it's also too long (121 minutes) and syrupy sweet to a fault. Sadly, it didn't have to be: Why make Oscar winner Hathaway "Dude, I'm on a bike," such a ditz? She's a C.E.O., not an insecure teenager. I'd much rather watch her interact with De Niro, than suffer through Meyers' misdirection. That said, I laughed (and smiled) enough to overlook Meyers' shortcomings.
