Volleyball Falls in Season Opener to George Mason, 3-0
Alyssa Sinnette had a match-high 12 kills in her collegiate debut
The Georgetown volleyball team dropped its season opener on Friday evening, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-18), to George Mason University. The match was played at American University's Bender Arena as part of the D.C. Challenge.
Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) led the Hoyas in her first collegiate match with a match-high 12 kills. Ashlie Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) was also in double figures with 10 kills. Liv King (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) added seven kills while Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) had five. Sinnette and Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) led GU with eight digs apiece while Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) added seven and finished with a match-high 29 assists.

In the first set, two kills from Sinnette and a service ace by Higareda gave the Hoyas an early 4-2 lead, but George Mason responded with a 12-2 run to take a 14-6 lead and force a Georgetown timeout. A kill and service ace by Williams, along with two George Mason errors, pulled the Hoyas within two, 19-17, but that was as close as they would get as the Patriots closed the set on a 6-3 run to win by a 25-20 score.

George Mason used a 5-0 run early in the second set to break a 4-4 tie and take a 9-4 advantage. Kills from McKnight and Sinnette, sandwiched around a King service ace, pulled the Hoyas to within 9-7. GU continued to trail until an ace by Sinnette and kill by McKnight gave the Blue & Gray its first lead of the set, 15-14. The two teams were tied at 20 before the Patriots scored four-consecutive points. Kills from Sinnette and Speech were not enough as George Mason took the second set, 25-22.

The Patriots jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 9-2 to force a Georgetown timeout early in the third set. Two kills by Williams, one from King and a Sinnette ace pulled the Hoyas to within 22-17, but George Mason scored three of the final four points to sweep the match with a 25-18 victory in the third set.

Georgetown will conclude the D.C. Challenge on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Hoyas will play both American (11 AM) and Howard (5 PM) on George Mason's campus.
