We Are Your Friends Movie Review

Zac Efron stars in We Are Your Friends

Young Hustlers Club

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole (Zac Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Wes Bentley) who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James' much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Emily Ratajkowski.) With Cole's forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he is destined for.

We Are Your Friends promises the "best night of your life," and for the most part, it delivers. Efron does most of the heavy lifting, building on the good will generated in The Paperboy & Neighbors. He's fun to watch, and clearly stands out amongst actors his age. He certainly doesn't oversell, which bodes well for his future. The plot is familiar (coming of age, etc.) but Bentley & Ratajkowski form an intriguing trio (with Efron) good enough to overshadow Cole's boring childhood pals. Millennial angst sneaks in at the end; but stick around for the eye candy and music.
