The Gift Movie Review

Jason Bateman stars in The Gift

The Giver That Keeps on Giving

IMDb Plot: A young married couple's lives are thrown into a harrowing tailspin when an acquaintance from the husband's past brings mysterious gifts and a horrifying secret to light after more than 20 years. Directed by Joel Edgerton.

Beware the red envelope... especially if it comes from a guy who gives glass cleaner as a housewarming present. The Gift pays homage to psychological thrillers of yesteryear; but it doesn't waste time with misdirection or pretenses. Edgerton's "Gordo the weirdo" is just that (and then some) from the word go. He's generous too (hence the title) and they're the kinds of gifts that keep on giving. Great directorial debut for Edgerton, and solid performances by Jason Bateman (edgier than usual) and Rebecca Hall. "Simon says," Expect a few laughs, screams and a twist or two towards its compelling finish.
