Ricki and the Flash Movie Review

Meryl Streep stars in Ricki and the Flash

Mama Was a Rollin' Stone

IMDb Plot: A musician (Ricki, played by Meryl Streep) who gave up everything for her dream of rock-and-roll stardom returns home, looking to make things right with her family. Directed by Jonathan Demme.

Leave it to Streep to turn a bad idea (Demme's Ricki and the Flash) into something watchable... even downright enjoyable (at times.) Unfortunately, you have to sit through an awful lot of singing (covers of Pink, U2, etc.) to experience it. Ricki's a joy to watch back at home (ditto for Kevin Kline and Audra McDonald) but her apparent desire to scratch "rock signer" off her acting bucket proves to be the film's ultimate undoing. More "shitstorm," less music (and grimy bar patrons) and I'd recommend it. As is, worth a look... for Streep, and a few laughs in between.
