Coco Vandeweghe joins the Citi Open WTA player field |
From our friends at the Citi Open...
The WTA Tour has informed tournament officials today that Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from the Citi Open Tennis Tournament due to injury.
Azarenka withdrew from the tournament today due to a right shoulder injury. In a video message to her Citi Open fans, the Grand Slam winner says that she is disappointed about missing this year’s tournament and that she hopes to return next year.
Meanwhile, as a new addition to the very impressive Citi Open WTA player field, Coco Vandeweghe will receive a wild card into the main draw of the tournament. The world No. 32-ranked American reached the quarterfinals in Wimbledon before falling to Maria Sharapova in three thrilling sets.
“Of course, we wish Vika could have played for our fans but hope she has a speedy recovery and is back on the court shortly,” said Jeff Newman, tournament director. “At the same time, we are very excited to have Coco join our field in her first event since her great run at Wimbledon.”
Other withdrawals to note due to injuries include Daniela Hantuchová (upper respiratory illness) and Sara Errani (left knee injury). On the men’s side, Thanasi Kokkinakis has withdrawn due to non-medical reasons as informed by the ATP World Tour.
The Citi Open starts this Saturday, August 1-9, 2015 featuring Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori, John Isner, and Eugenie Bouchard, Sloane Stephens, Sam Stosur and many more or the world’s best tennis professionals.
