Amy Winehouse |
The Price of Fame
IMDb Plot: A documentary on the late singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011.
Asif Kapadia's Amy is startling, both in its unrivaled access (to Winehouse) and the tragedy of her success. As a documentary, it's pure genius. On the other hand, her life (and its inevitable outcome) is such a train wreck, it's almost impossible to judge them separately. The first half is relatively upbeat... a celebration of her genius; but the last hour plays out as one endless line of enablers, disguised as bodyguards, family & friends, attempting to pass the blame for Winehouse's "demise" onto anyone else but themselves. Amy's "atmosphere of celebrity" eventually (and predictably) engulfs her. What a shame.
