Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter Movie Review

The New World

IMDb Plot: A jaded Japanese woman discovers a hidden copy of Fargo (1996) on VHS, believing it to be a treasure map indicating the location of a large case of money.

29-year-old Kumiko (Rinko Kikuchi) fancies herself a Spanish conquistador, "in search of untold riches," but truth is, she's a disillusioned loner with what her boss describes as an, "increasingly poor disposition." We never learn why she's obsessed; but I must admit, the ride (especially stateside) is a blast. It's a clever black comedy with gobs of originality, featuring a hilarious scene where Kumiko tries to bribe a library guard... with pocket change, "I 'm willing to make it worth your while." Daring in its simplicity, Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter is one woman's destiny... on a one-way road to Neverland.
