Le Creuset Amethyst Mug Product Review

I'm pretty low-maintenance, especially regarding household items; but when it comes to my kitchen, all bets are off. I like trusted brands, great quality and every now and then... a splash of color. Atop my range, you'll find one of my favorite items - a 4½ qt. cast iron round dutch oven. It's orange, cost about 250 bucks (over 10 years ago, when $250 used to be a lot of dough) and comes from Le Creuset. I'm rather proud of it: It tells people I know how to cook (at least a little) and it has the battle scars to prove it. So imagine my delight when I was asked to review Le Creuset's newest addition to their Matte Collection. Not an item per se, but a color. Amethyst.

As luck would have it, my favorite coffee mug broke recently (clumsy lady friend, long story... should have put my name on it) but one door closes mug breaks, and another appears. The color's rich, and the enamel exterior - scratch and stain resistant. It also sports the Le Creuset name, embossed across the bottom. Sure it's just a mug (12 oz., $14) but it helps offset the myriad of beer and wine glasses, emblazoned with names like Heineken and Samuel Adams "on display" in my cupboard. It tells people, "Hey, this guy has a bit of class... cut him some slack." Man, am I insecure or what?

Matte Collection Mug (Amethyst)

Insecurities aside, Le Creuset is one of the few brands that still makes an impression (especially with folks who like to cook.) The color says a lot too... So much so, that I stopped by the Signature Store in Bethesda Row to splurge on the matching Whistling Kettle ($100) a day later. There's 17 other items (in amethyst) available; but with great quality, sometimes comes an expensive price tag. Click here to see the full line. Me? I might have to settle for a few more mugs, at least until Christmas (or when I win the lottery.) As for you... A splash of color might be just what the doctor ordered.
