The world-famous National Cherry Blossom Festival spring celebration in Washington, D.C., commemorates the March 27, 1912, gift of Japanese cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo City to the city of Washington. Mayor Ozaki donated the trees in an effort to enhance the growing friendship between the United States and Japan and also celebrate the continued close relationship between the two nations. Today, the Festival not only features over 3,000 blossoms around iconic landmarks such as the Tidal Basin, but it also serves as a backdrop for a citywide festival of cultural events and exhibitions ranging from a colorful opening ceremony (March 22nd) to the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival (April 5th). The National Cherry Blossom Festival Dates this year are from March 20th to April 12th. For more information visit www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org.
