UDC Suffers Lopsided Loss vs. Daemen

The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team was defeated, 95-72 by Daemen College in East Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon in the nation's capital.

Senior guard Michael Terry (Criminal Justice - Philadelphia, PA/Boston U) led all UDC scorers with 19 points and freshman guard Kory Cooley (Art - Silver Spring, MD/Calvin Coolidge HS) added 14 points, but UDC dropped its second straight ECC game to fall to 2-2 in league play and 2-10 overall.

Daemen, which improved to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in league play, was led by guard Torrence Dyck, Jr., who led all scorers with 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field  and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line. Forward Jordan Greene added a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds and ECC Pre-season Co-Player of the Year Gerald Beverly added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Wildcats out-shot the Firebirds 52-percent to 42-percent from the field and out-rebounded UDC, 42-29. Daemen also out-scored UDC 48-28 in the paint, 25-5 in second-chance points, and cashed in for 18 points on 15 UDC turnovers.

Daemen raced out to an early 10-2 lead and later took a 22-11 advantage following a layup by Nick Petrucelli (8 pts) with 11:17 left before the break. UDC answered with a 17-6 run over the next six minutes that knotted the score at 28 after an emphatic fast-break steal and slam by Cooley. The teams traded hoops for the next three minutes, with Daemen holding a slim 33-32 lead when a bucket by Alex Borges sparked the Wildcats on a 12-2 run. A layup by Dyck with 26 seconds left before intermission capped the run and gave Daemen a 45-34 lead. Terry buried a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer, which made it 45-37 as the two teams headed to the locker rooms.

Supreme Hannah gave Daemen a 54-44 lead when he drained a three-pointer five minutes into the second half, and the Wildcats later upped their lead to 15 points, 68-53, after Beverly grabbed an offensive rebound and slammed home the put-back with 9:27 left to play. UDC answered with a 9-4 spur and cut the lead to 10 points, 72-62, following a bucket by junior guard Erin Senegal (Political Science - Lafayette, LA/Caldwell) with 7:22 left, but Daemen outscored the Firebirds 12-2 over the next three minutes to secure the win. A three-point play by Greene with 4:21 capped the run and gave Daemen an 84-64 lead. UDC came no closer than 17 points down the stretch.

The Firebirds will now begin a three-game ECC road stretch, beginning with a January 7th visit to Rockville Centre, NY to take on Molloy. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
