Colonials Host 2015 EAGL Championship on March 21
The George Washington gymnastics team was picked to finish third out of six teams in the 2015 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Preseason Coaches Poll, the league announced on Tuesday.
NC State was picked first overall with 34 points, including four first-place votes, while defending EAGL champion New Hampshire was picked to finish second (30 points, 1 first-place vote). GW totaled 26 points with one first-place vote for third and was followed by Pittsburgh (17 points), North Carolina (13 points) and Towson (6 points).
The Colonials return 10 letterwinners from last season's squad that finished fifth overall at the 2014 EAGL Championship. GW also welcomes seven freshmen to the roster for the 2015 season. The members of the rookie class come from six different states and will provide immediate contributions in the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise and all-around lineups.
Reigning EAGL Rookie of the Year Chelsea Raineri, along with then-seniors Betsy Zander, Kiera Kenney and Brittany Doran, became the first student-athletes in program history to earn an event title at an EAGL Championship at last year's event in Durham, New Hampshire. Raineri was crowned co-champion on vault while the senior trio of Zander, Kenney and Doran finished in a first-place tie on uneven bars.
GW opens the 2015 season at Maryland on Friday, Jan. 9, in a tri-meet with West Virginia. The Colonials' home opener will be the eighth annual Lindsey Ferris Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 18. GW will host the 2015 EAGL Championship at the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday, March 21.
