Coach Mike Lonergan Bolsters Coaching Staff with Top Northeast Assistant
Carmen Maciariello, one of the top recruiters and skill developers in the Northeast, has been named an assistant coach for the GW men's basketball program, Head Coach Mike Lonergan announced on Thursday, May 1.
"Coach Maciariello is a great addition to our talented coaching staff," said Coach Lonergan. "He's attracted and developed some of the best players in school history at his previous stops. More importantly, he's helped make those programs successful and competitive at a very high level. I'm confident he'll have the same impact with our student-athletes and program at GW and in the Atlantic 10."
Coach Maciariello brings six years of experience as an assistant coach and more than a decade of involvement in NCAA Division I basketball to GW, most recently as an assistant on Joe Jones' coaching staff at Boston University from 2011-14. During his six seasons as an assistant at both BU and Fairfield, teams have posted combined records of 122-74 overall and 75-29 in conference play.

BU went 57-40 overall, 38-12 in league play and made a pair of postseason appearances during his three seasons, highlighted by a 24-11 overall record, Patriot League regular-season title with a 15-3 league mark and trip to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 2013-14. While at BU, he was instrumental in the development of nine all-conference and all-rookie team selections, including 2012 America East Player of the Year Darryl Partin.
Prior to his tenure at BU, Coach Maciariello spent three seasons as an assistant on Ed Cooley's staff at Fairfield University. He helped the Stags to a 65-34 mark, 37-17 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and two postseason appearances, including a school-record 25 wins, MAAC regular-season championship with a 15-3 conference mark and advancement to the NIT second round in 2010-11.
He joined Cooley as an Assistant Coach and Director of Basketball Operations at Providence College in the spring and summer of 2011 before accepting the assistant role at BU. He was also the Director of Basketball Operations at his alma mater, Siena College, under Fran McCaffery during the 2005-06 season.
Coach Maciariello concluded his four-year collegiate playing career at Siena in 2000-01, helping the Saints post a 20-win season and share of the MAAC regular-season title. He graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in marketing/management from Siena that spring.
Before transferring to Siena, he spent three seasons at the University of New Hampshire where he served as team captain as a junior in 1998-99 and was the Wildcats' Defensive Player of the Year in 1998.
Following his collegiate career, Coach Maciariello received Italian citizenship and played four professional seasons in Italy before returning to the U.S. to pursue teaching and coaching.
From 2006-07, Coach Maciariello worked as a one-on-one aide for children with special needs in the North Colonie School District near his hometown of Clifton Park, N.Y. He then spent two years as vice president and head coach of the Albany City Rocks, a Nike-sponsored AAU travel team. With the City Rocks, Maciariello coached a number of top Division I players, including Jimmer Fredette (Chicago Bulls), Mark Lyons (Arizona), and Talor Battle (Penn State).
The Albany Times Union's scholastic Player of the Year at Shenendehowa High School in 1996, Coach Maciariello was inducted into the New York Capital District Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
