Men's Basketball: American 59 Colgate 50

Men’s Basketball Victorious Over Colgate, 59-50; Advances to Patriot League Semifinal Saturday in Bender at 5:30 p.m.

The American University men's basketball team advanced to the final four of the Patriot League Tournament with a, 59-50, win over Colgate in the Quarterfinals at Bender Arena on Wednesday night. The No. 2 Eagles move on to host No. 3 Holy Cross, Saturday, March 8 at 5:30 p.m.

The AU defense was strong against the Raiders, holding Colgate to 3-of-15 attempts from 3-point range, while the Eagles registered eight steals and a 34-27 rebounding edge.

John Schoof (#22) led all scorers with 16 points

Junior guard and Third Team All-Patriot League selection John Schoof led all scorers with 16 points, missing only a single shot (6-of-7), while adding six rebounds and three assists. Conference Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-League selection Tony Wroblicky registered his eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, adding five assists and two blocks.

Jesse Reed (#14) scored 7 points with 6 rebounds & 2 steals

"It was another hard-fought Patriot League game tonight. Colgate can really shoot, so I thought we did a good job keeping them from getting open looks – really getting up on shooters," said head coach Mike Brennan. "We have some great leadership on this team and John, Tony and Pee Wee really stepped up for us; making some clutch plays down the stretch.

Tony Wroblicky (#34) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds

Colgate, which relies heavily on the 3-ball, attempting 642 coming into the game - 100 more than their opponents - was held without a triple in the first half, going 0-of-7 from downtown.

Marko Vasic (#5) scored 6 points with 6 rebounds

American held the Raiders to only 7-of-24 attempts from the field in the first half, building a 17-point advantage with 6:24 to play in the first half, eventually taking a 30-15 lead into the break.

Kudos to Tony Crisp and his fellow officials

The Eagles held a double-digit lead for much the second half, but Colgate was able to make a comeback cutting it to single digits at 46-37 with 3:51 to play.

Three times, the Raiders with able to get within seven in the final two minutes against the Eagles, but each sequence so an AU rebuttal, twice coming on two-handed transition slam dunks by Wroblicky, which put exclamation points on American's victory.

Second Team All-Patriot League point guard Darius "Pee Wee" Gardner joined Wroblicky and Schoof in double-digit scoring with 12 points, adding three rebounds, four assists and two steals.

There will be at least one more home game at Bender Arena this season as the No. 2 seeded Eagles will host the No. 3 Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday, March 8, at 5:30 p.m. AU won both meetings between the two schools this season.
