American Hustle Tops Fourth Annual Teacher's Pet Awards

Jennifer Lawrence & Amy Adams (r) in American Hustle

We don't pretend to know better than the Academy; but that doesn't prevent us from announcing our winners of the fourth annual Teacher's Pet Awards. DC Outlook is taking over the reigns from DC Film Review, and presenting Red Apples to winners of the following eight categories (say adieu to Best Action Sequence & Foreign Film.) We're also honored to name Clint Eastwood as the winner of the Lifetime of Achievement award, previously given to Gene HackmanKirk Douglas and Christopher Lee. Congratulations to all.

Looking back, I can't help but feel underwhelmed. I saw fewer movies in 2013, true; but I saw a lot fewer good movies. I struggled to come up with three nominees in two different categories... That's not a good sign, is it? American Hustle finished #2 behind Gravity in our year-end Top 10; but it's hard to award Best Film for part of a movie... no matter how impressive that part is. That said, I made the switch; thus giving American Hustle three total Red Apples, one ahead of Gravity.
