Eagles Rout Terriers, Win Sixth Straight
No contest. The American Eagles women's basketball team won their sixth straight game in convincing style, whipping rival Boston University 69-44 before a relatively quiet crowd of 357 (few students) at Bender Arena tonight. The win, coupled with Colgate's 71-60 upset of Army earlier this evening leaves AU in sole possession of second place in the Patriot League, a game behind conference leader Navy (13-2.) The Eagles travel to West Point on Saturday, hoping to avenge last month's 64-63 heartbreaking loss at home to Army; before returning to Bender next Wednesday for their regular season finale versus Navy. BIG games indeed.
The visiting Terriers had no answer for the Eagles, who came out ahead in every key statistic. Rebounding (+11) Assists (+10) FG% (+8.1%) Three-pointers (+7) and three less turnovers. Junior forward Arron Zimmerman led the Eagles in scoring (12) and rebounds (11) earning her second double-double of the season. Senior Alexis Dobbs hit three treys in the first half, on her way to a nine point, team-high six assist night. The Second Team All-Patriot League selection also added three steals to her impressive line. Forwards Michelle Holmes and Sarah Kiely matched Dobbs' total of nine points, spearheading a balanced AU attack.
Arron Zimmerman (#13) was all smiles, leading AU with 12 points |
American jumped out to 33-17 advantage at halftime, and never gave BU a chance to come back. The Eagles held Boston U. to a dismal 33.3 FG% and an even more disappointing 18.2% from beyond the arc (compared to a whopping 44% for AU.) After the break, AU went on a 14-1 run to put the game out of reach (a 29-point deficit with 14:32 left in the game.) From there, Eagles' head coach Megan Gebbia could just sit back and relax (nice boots BTW... Coach knows how to dress.)
Lauren Crisler (#10) scored 5 points with 3 rebounds off the bench |
