Women's Basketball: UDC 69 Queens (N.Y.) 53

Denikka Brent (#11) led UDC with 19 points

Alone at the Top: UDC Takes Control of ECC

Juniors Denikka Brent and Telisha Turner combined for 35 points, leading UDC women's basketball team to a resounding 69-53 victory over ECC rival Queens College yesterday at the UDC Sports Complex. The win put the Lady Firebirds back atop the ECC standings, putting an end to the Knights' six-game winning streak in the process.

UDC improves to 11-3 overall (8-2 at home) with an even more impressive 7-1 conference record. Queens falls to 11-4, 7-2. The first 14 minutes were just about even, before UDC went on a 15-3 run to grab a 31-19 halftime lead. Turner nailed two three-pointers on her way to a 12-point first half: The 5'3 dynamo also had three of her game-high five steals in the first frame. Both teams shot below 35% for the half; but UDC's unrelenting defensive pressure put this game out of reach earlier than expected.

Brent took over in the second half, scoring 12 points on 6-9 shooting. UDC shot an incredible 59.3% for the half, never letting off the gas in typical head coach Jay Butler-style. They also held Queens to zero three-pointers, and forced 23 turnovers: When the Firebirds tighten up on D, they're practically unstoppable. Shantrel Oliver added nine points off the bench, along with seven points from sophomore Tiara Goode (3-3, 1-1 3-pt) and six points from 6'2 senior Milena Bubnjevic.

UDC looks to make it four straight, when they return home on Wednesday to host the Purple Knights of Bridgeport (5-10, 3-6 ECC) at 5:00 PM. It's Homecoming, so let's hope for a nice crowd. I'm pretty sure Coach Jay and his team will handle their end of the deal (AKA win #12.)

Telisha Turner scored 16 points with 7 assists and 5 steals
