Women's Basketball: UDC 85 LIU Post 75

Telisha Turner (#1) led UDC with 23 points & 4 steals

The UDC women's basketball team came to life in the second half, exploding for a 20-5 run over a six-minute stretch to top ECC rival LIU Post 85-75 and improve their record to 6-0 (2-0 in the ECC.) Juniors Telisha Turner & Denikka Brent combined for 43 points, and senior Teara Shaw added 15 points, four assists and three steals to lead the Firebirds at home. You get the feeling that this season might be something special.

LIU Post raced out to an early 13-3 lead, before UDC roared back to grab a 35-32 halftime lead. The Pioneers (3-3, 1-1) responded with a 9-4 run to start the second half, before UDC's aforementioned +15 run. Junior guard Chelsea Williams led all players with 30 points and 10 rebounds in an impressive performance, but she also committed six turnovers (UDC forced 24 total for the game.)

Teara Shaw (#10) added 15 points, 4 assists & 3 steals

Although the Firebirds won by 10, the game was actually much closer. LIU Post outshot the home team 48.3% to 46.5% and had one more three-pointer (7-6.) UDC won the battle of the boards (38-35) and shot an impressive 86.7% from the charity stripe. In addition to the turnover +/-, UDC also dominated in the paint (48-38.) Neither team scored a fast break point (yikes.)

Denikka Brent (#11) shot 9-14 with 20 points

You have to give a lot of credit to UDC for establishing an advantage down low, and to coach Jay Butler's suffocating full court pressure. Defense wins championships; and right now, UDC has one of the best in the country. Transfer guard Turner is looking like a real find as well: Her 22.3 PPG average at Harcum Junior College was no fluke. So far this season, Telisha has four games with 20+ points (20.5 PPG.)

Tatyana Calhoun (#32) had 8 points & 7 rebounds

UDC returns home on Wednesday to host the Bears of Shaw University (3-1) at 6:00 PM. Is it too much to ask for 7-0? I hardly think so. Go Firebirds!
