Women's Volleyball: GW 3 Dayton 1

Freshman Chidima Osuchukwu (#8) had 9 kills

It's been almost 11 years since the GW women's volleyball team has defeated A-10 rival Dayton. That's 16 straight losses to a conference juggernaut that has won five of the past six A-10 titles. That all ended last night as the Colonials defeated the Flyers 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 27-25, 25-23) in what has to be the team's most satisfying victory of the season. With the win, GW improves to 12-11 overall and an impressive 7-2 in conference.

Junior Kelsey Newman led all players with 21 kills and tied teammate Maddy Doyle for top honors in digs (17.) GW has now won seven of its past eight matches, including four straight at home; and looks poised to earn a high seeding at the A-10 conference tournament (held at Smith Center, November 22-24.)

Rachel Goss (#1) performs magic at the net

Dayton meanwhile falls to 10-12 (4-6 in conference) despite being unanimously selected to repeat as A-10 champs this season. Sophomore Jill Loiars led the Flyers with 12 kills, and matched senior Megan Campbell with a team-high 14 points. These two teams will battle again in Dayton, Ohio for their respective regular season finales on November 17th.

Newman was one of three Lady Colonials with double-figure kills, joined by senior Rachel Goss (16) and junior Landon Garvik (10.) Frosh setter Emily Clemens cleaned up with a match-high 52 assists (a dozen more than the entire Dayton squad.) GW returns home tonight for a huge match-up with A-10 leader Duquesne (15-7, 9-1.)
