Colonials Extend Win Streak to Three with Wins Over Johns Hopkins and Hobart
The No. 19 George Washington men's squash team extended its season-opening win streak to three with a pair of victories over Johns Hopkins and Hobart on Sunday afternoon at the United States Naval Academy.
GW (3-0) easily handled Johns Hopkins (4-1) in the first match of the day, winning all matches in straight sets. Freshman Nicolas Valderrama was particularly strong, yielding a total of two points in his 11-1, 11-1, 11-0 triumph over Peter Wu at No. 2.
Freshman Ari Bental won via forfeit at the No. 9 position.
In the nightcap, the Colonials downed Hobart College (0-3), 6-3.
The Colonials easily won the top five matches on the ladder, with freshmen Andres de Frutos (No. 1), Valderrama (No. 2) and Josh Marks (No. 5) and sophomores James Reiss (No. 3) and Reid Breck (No. 4) each picking up their second victories of the day.
Reiss and Marks each dropped their second sets before rallying for 3-1 victories.
At No. 7, freshman Auguste Boova won in four sets, 13-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-8 over Arthur Martella to clinch the 6-3 win for the Colonials.
GW returns to action next weekend with visits to No. 12 Columbia (Sat., 5 p.m.) and No. 14 Penn (Sun., 3 p.m.).
