GW Volleyball's Newman & Clemens Earn Atlantic 10 Weekly Awards

Newman Named Offensive Player of the Week, Clemens Tabbed Rookie of the Week

George Washington volleyball junior Kelsey Newman was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week and freshman setter Emily Clemens was tabbed as the Rookie of the Week on Monday after the pair led the Colonials to a 2-0 weekend.

Newman hit .309 with 37 kills and 24 digs in GW's wins over Dayton and Duquesne to earn her second career Atlantic 10 Weekly Award. She was previously named Rookie of the Week during her freshman season in 2011.

In Friday's win over Dayton, GW's first over the Flyers since 2002, Newman led all players with 21 kills and added 17 digs for her 10th career double-double. Her hot hitting continued into Saturday night as she led four Colonials in double-digit kills with a team-high 16 winners against Duquesne. She added seven digs and a block assist as the Colonials won their third straight match. For the week she averaged 4.62 kills and 3.00 digs per set.

Clemens averaged 12.12 assists and 3.25 digs per set and posted a pair of double-doubles in the two victories to earn her first career A-10 weekly award. In Friday's win over Dayton, Clemens posted a season-high 52 assists and registered 14 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.

Against Duquesne on Saturday she posted her eighth double-double with 45 assists and 12 digs while adding three kills and two block assists.

GW concludes its home schedule with matches against Fordham (Fri., 4 p.m.) and Rhode Island (Sun., 1 p.m.) this weekend.
