UDC Tops Cal (Pa.) 2-1; Improves to 3-0

UDC's Louis Connor (#1) had his third great game in goal

3-0, or should I say 3 and "oh, where did the ECC coaches pick UDC to finish this season?" In case you forgot (don't worry, I won't let you) they said 10th out of 11. After today's 2-1 win over California (Pa.,) the Firebirds are undefeated and ranked 10th in the NCSAA East Region poll. Suddenly my prediction of an 11-7 season is looking modest.

Temperatures hovered in the mid-90s before today's 3:00 PM kickoff; but UDC wasted no time in jumping out to a 1-0 lead on freshman forward Felix Angerer's second goal in three games, less than three minutes into the game. Angerer, who was recently named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week converted a fine pass from senior Jose Garcia and knocked it in from almost 20 yards out.

Bakary Coulibaly (#20) celebrates his 1st half goal

The Firebirds increased their lead to 2-0 on a gorgeous goal by senior defender Bakary Coulibaly with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half. Meanwhile, Louis Connor was sensational once again in goal, stopping all kinds of shots (he got credit for three total saves; but I saw at least that many in the first half alone.) His shutout streak of 287+ minutes ended when Cal's Jon Murphy scored on a rebound with just over 12 minutes remaining. UDC held on for the win, despite getting outshot 11-10. Connor has allowed only two goals all season: Looks like we finally have a goalie worth keeping (pun intended.)

Roque Hernandez (#7) navigates the Vulcans' interior D

UDC looks to make it 4-0 this Saturday, when it hosts Nyack at 1:00 PM. Don't forget: The UDC SAAC will be collecting money for the ‘Make-A-Wish’ charity. The latest weather forecast is calling for 72* and sunny. Let's show our support with a big turnout!
