All Smiles, No Mercy: UDC Wins 106-86

Quasim Jones makes a circus shot to close the first half

UDC ended their season on the highest of notes, crushing visiting Mercy 106-86 yesterday at the University Sports Complex. The Firebirds ended a challenging 6-20 (5-13 ECC) campaign with four straight victories at home, including two contests in which they scored 100 points or more. Junior sensation  Michael Terry tallied a season-high 38 points and perhaps even more impressive, notched 10 rebounds (seven on the offensive end.)

Yesterday's game marked the last time Firebird fans will get to see outgoing seniors Keith Brooks, Brandon Ennis, D'Angelo Johnson and Ralph Watts... all of whom were honored in a pre-game Senior Day celebration. Each player responded in fine fashion, as the foursome combined for 46 points (led by Johnson's 15.) Junior Quasim Jones notched a double-double with 10 points and assists. Even fan favorite Omar Abbas got in on the action, scoring seven points in the game's final five minutes.

Mercy (4-22, 3-15 ECC) was led by senior Joseph Pope, who scored 25 points to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists. Both teams shot better than 51% for the game, but UDC converted 19 Mercy College turnovers into 23 points. UDC also topped 50 points in each half... Talk about balance! It's difficult to not be excited about next year's prospects. It will be interesting to see who head coach Jeff Ruland and his staff get to replace their outgoing seniors; but matching them up with the ECC's most exciting backcourt (Jones and Terry) should make an easy sell. See you next season!
