AU Trounces UMW in Exhibition

Senior F Stephen Lumpkins scores a first-half basket

The American Eagles men's basketball team opened their 2012-13 campaign with a 71-46 rout of Mary Washington University last night before 871 at Bender Arena. AU jumped out to a 40-22 halftime lead, behind 12 points from senior forward Stephen Lumpkins... and never looked back.

Five players scored in double figures, led by Lumpkins (12.) Junior center Tony Wroblicky racked up an astounding 18 rebounds (8 offensive) in just 28 minutes, but missed several easy buckets that likely drew the ire of head coach Jeff Jones. American shot 50% from the field (44.4% from 3-pt territory) while holding UMW's Eagles to just 31.2% shooting. Toss in a 42-23 edge in rebounding, and AU looks more than ready for their regular season opener at Big 10 stalwart Minnesota (coached by Tubby Smith) on November 9.
