Only the Brave Movie Review

Miles Teller & Josh Brolin (r) star in Only the Brave

(Not So) Hotshots

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: All men are created equal... then, a few become firefighters. Only the Brave, based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, is the heroic story of one unit of local firefighters that through hope, determination, sacrifice, and the drive to protect families, communities, and our country become one of the most elite firefighting teams in the country. As most of us run from danger, they run toward it - they watch over our lives, our homes, everything we hold dear, as they forge a unique brotherhood that comes into focus with one fateful fire. Directed by Joseph Kosinski.

I appreciate character development and sentimentality as much as the next guy; but Kosinski's Only the Brave lays it on a bit thick for my liking. 133 minutes drags on, as the always terrific Josh Brolin assembles & trains "the SEAL Team 6 of fire fighters" to do battle with wildfires in the American Southwest. Trouble is, Kosinski prefers to pick away at what makes each character tick... ad nauseam. Hardly any fire, or people of color (save for a bouncer) but plenty of time for Jennifer Connelly to overact/scream, and Jeff Bridges to sing a song. No thanks.

Grade: D
