Detroit Movie Review

Police Overreach

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: From Kathryn Bigelow, the Academy Award-winning director of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, Detroit tells the gripping story of one of the darkest moments during the civil unrest that rocked Detroit in the summer of '67.

Bigelow pulls no punches in her brutal, yet captivating Detroit. Few filmmakers can match the Oscar winner's uncanny ability to capture real life, especially up close and personal. And personal, it is. After almost two and a half (nonstop) hours of fear, hatred and violence, I left the theater emotionally spent. Don't expect a happy ending, but do expect raw/stellar performances from John Boyega, Anthony Mackie and relative newcomer Algee Smith. It's a shame it runs so long, otherwise, this could be one of the year's best. As is, a "must-see," but not necessarily for the faint of heart.
