Rough Night Movie Review

Kate McKinnon & Scarlett Johansson (r) star in Rough Night

Friendipede

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: In the R-rated comedy Rough Night, five friends from college (played by Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer, and Zoë Kravitz) reunite when they rent a beach house in Miami for a wild bachelorette weekend that goes completely off the rails. Just when all hope is lost, they realize there's more to the story than they could've ever imagined. Directed by Lucia Aniello.

Johansson's Jess proclaims, "We've got to do this for womankind!" What's this? A weekend of debauchery, penis pasta and sex swings, that's sure to trigger Bridesmaids déjà vu, with a side of Weekend at Bernie's (only a lot funnier.) In the hands of a more experienced filmmaker, Rough Night could be a hit; but Aniello's story (written with co-star Paul W. Downs) is uneven, packed with predictable high jinks and outlandish detours (in no particular order.) ScarJo struggles as a comedic lead (she's not very funny) but McKinnon and Bell are downright hysterical at times. Plenty of hits... and misses.

Grade: C+
