Strathmore Presents Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Joshua Bell

Mendelssohn, Mozart from one of the world’s most prominent chamber orchestras

Incomparable violinist Joshua Bell returns to the acoustically pristine Music Center at Strathmore with the legendary Academy of St Martin in the Fields on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 8 PM. The concert includes performances of Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 in D Major, finished by Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4, A Major, Op. 90, Italian. For more information, call (301) 581-5100 or visit www.strathmore.org.

Joshua Bell’s restless curiosity, passion, and multifaceted musical interests have made him one of the most celebrated violinists of his era. Named the Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in 2011, Bell is the first person to hold this post since Sir Neville Marriner formed the orchestra in 1958. Their first recording under Bell’s leadership of Beethoven’s 4th and 7th symphonies debuted at  No. 1 on the Billboard Classical Chart.

Bell has recorded more than 40 albums, garnering Mercury, Grammy, Gramophone, and Echo Klassik awards. Recent releases include, Musical Gifts From Joshua Bell and Friends, French Impressions with pianist Jeremy Denk, the eclectic At Home With Friends, the Defiance soundtrack, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with the Berlin Philharmonic, The Red Violin Concerto, Voice of the Violin, and Romance of the Violin, which Billboard named Classical Album of the Year and earned Bell the title of Classical Artist of the Year.

Bell’s career has now spanned over 30 years as a soloist, chamber musician, recording artist, and conductor. He performs on the 1713 Guberman Stradivarius.

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields - one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world - was formed in 1958 from a group of leading London musicians. Working without a conductor, the Academy gave its first performance in its namesake church in 1959. Originally directed by Sir Neville Marriner from the leader’s chair, the collegial spirit and flexibility of the original small, conductor-less ensemble remains an Academy hallmark. Today, the orchestra presents some 100 concerts around the world each year, performing chamber music on a grand scale.

With over 500 recordings to date, the Academy is one of the most recorded chamber orchestras in the world. The orchestra received its first certified gold disc for their recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in 1969, and the 2007 recording of the piece with Joshua Bell reached No. 1 on the Billboard Classical Chart. Its soundtrack for the film Amadeus won 13 gold discs alone, and The English Patient, with a soundtrack performed by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, picked up an Academy Award for Best Dramatic Score, a Golden Globe for Best Original Score, BAFTA Award for Best Film Music, and Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture or for Television.
