True Story Movie Review

Jonah Hill and James Franco (r) star in True Story

A Tale of Two Crimes

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: When disgraced New York Times reporter Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) meets accused killer Christian Longo (James Franco) - who has taken on Finkel's identity - his investigation morphs into an unforgettable game of cat-and-mouse. Based on actual events, Finkel's relentless pursuit of Longo's true story encompasses murder, love, deceit and redemption.

Capote meets This is the End in True Story, 2015's most misguided film (so far.) "Two negatives don't make a positive," yet Franco & Hill push on with Razzie-like inefficiency. Hill is especially terrible, coughing up lines like, "I've been through a trial myself," and "You out-Seussed me. That's impressive." Both lines directed at a guy, accused of killing his entire family. It's impossible-to-swallow, badly acted (and miscast) and poorly edited (thanks to first-time feature director Rupert Goold, who should probably stick to Shakespeare.) The real-life story is much more interesting: Why not show that, instead of this failed bromance?
