Cosi Food Review III

Pork Belly Banh Mi

There's a new kid sandwich in town; and boy, let me tell you... It's delicious. Cosi's Pork Belly Banh Mi packs a day's worth of flavor into your 30-minute lunch break; and odds are, you're gonna love it. It isn't necessarily cheap ($8.29) but comes with your choice of potato chips or baby carrots.

What's inside? Tender pork belly, a special Asian ginger sauce, daikon, carrots, cabbage and jalapeños. The results? Sheer, unadulterated bliss. In my profession, one has to be willing to eat anything; but just like everyone else, I often omit an ingredient or two. Not with this sandwich however. There's a lot going on, granted; but it comes together in perfect harmony on your plate. The bread (always pick Cosi's signature flatbread) ranks near or at the top of DC's best. Expect beautiful, vibrant colors, and tons of taste. Tops on the list... red cabbage and jalapeños (thought I was going to lead with the pork belly, didn't you?) The bánh mì (Vietnamese for bread) combines hot & cold better than most... finished off with delectably tender pork belly (just enough, although I'd love a little more.)

There's also lots of crunch (carrots, daikon) and spice (ginger, jalapeños.) Truly, I can't imagine how one could improve upon it. Another ingredient? Too much. One less? A crime of the culinary order. Paired with kettle-cooked chips (in the bag, thank you very much) and Cosi's standard-issue friendly service (including delivery straight to your table) this could be one of DC's best sandwiches. It's well on it's way, already surpassing their amazing (and well-reviewedTandoori Chicken.

Make sure to pick up a free CosìCard, a combo gift/reward card that provides freebies after 10 qualifying purchases. Just think, 10 Pork Belly Banh Mi's = 1 FREE Pork Belly Banh Mi. That's my kind of math. The Pork Belly Banh Mi is destined to be your kind of sandwich.
