The Drop Movie Review

Tom Hardy stars in The Drop

Glory Days

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: THE DROP is a new crime drama from MichaĆ«l R. Roskam, the Academy Award-nominated director of Bullhead. Based on a screenplay from Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone), THE DROP follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters - "money drops" in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (James Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood's past. Also featuring Noomi Rapace, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ann Dowd and John Ortiz.

It may not have the most original storyline; but Roskam's The Drop manages to entertain to no end. Incredibly gritty with a slow-boil pace, this is the kind of movie that (thankfully) takes its time with everything. There's tension (Hardy vs. Schoenaerts) love, loyalty, pride... and even an adorable pit bull. Hardy plays a ticking time bomb better than anyone; while Gandolfini reminds us, why we loved (and miss) him so much. Great supporting cast, just enough violence to keep you on edge, and precise execution = a recipe for success. "Some fuckin' day Marv." "Some fuckin' day."
