January & February Performances in the Mansion at Strathmore

Pianist Yael Weiss unveils new 32 Bright Clouds project with five world premieres;
DC-area premieres by Tessa Lark, Verona Quartet

The new year brings new music to the Mansion at Strathmore, with seven World and DC-area premieres in its January and February Music in the Mansion concerts. Pianist Yael Weiss unveils her 32 Bright Clouds project, an expression of unity and peace during turbulent times that pairs the 32 Beethoven piano sonatas with 32 newly-commissioned short piano compositions from 32 composers in 32 different countries spanning the globe. This first installment of the project features five world premieres by composers from Iran, Syria, Jordan, Ghana, and the Philippines. Tessa Lark’s technical precision and sensitive interpretation has made her a budding star in classical music, whose Kentucky roots keep her returning to bluegrass and the music of Appalachia. Her performance juxtaposes the DC-area premiere of Michael Thurber’s Violin Sonata, written specifically for Lark, with pieces by John Corigliano, Beethoven, and Stravinsky - an illustration of her ability to oscillate between the classical canon and contemporary multi-genre works. Four instrumental voices melt into an organic whole when Verona Quartet performs the DC-area premiere of composer Michael Gilbertson’s Quartet, which Verona co-commissioned, alongside works by Czech composer Leoš Janáček and Mozart. Notably, Quartet was a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist, with the honor ultimately going to rapper Kendrick Lamar.

The Quake Movie Review

Edith Haagenrud-Sande stars in The Quake

Alternative Theories

IMDb Plot: In 1904, an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale shook Oslo, with an epicenter in the "Oslo Graben," which runs under the Norwegian capital. There are now signs that indicate that we can expect a major future earthquake in Oslo. Directed by John Andreas Andersen.

Arch Campbell's Weekend Movie Guide (12/14/18)

Guy Pearce and Margot Robbie (r) star in Mary Queen of Scots

From our friend, Arch Campbell...

Roma - 4 Stars. Alfonso Cuarón recreates his childhood in middle class Mexico City (during the early 1970s) and the nanny he & his family loved.

First Man - 4 Stars. Ryan Gosling blasts into space as strong, silent Neil Armstrong - the first man to walk on the Moon. The mix of biography and space gave me goosebumps.

Green Book - 3½ Stars. New York bouncer drives jazz pianist on a concert tour of 1962 pre-civil rights South. Each man emerges better for the experience.

Can You Ever Forgive Me? - 3½ Stars. Melissa McCarthy nails the story of writer Lee Israel, who faked a series of celebrity letters, when her career sputters. Funny and charming.

Men’s Basketball Slips vs. Valpo, 82-79

The Colonials shot .585 from the field, while Valparaiso hit 15-of-27 three-pointers

In a Saturday afternoon affair against the Missouri Valley's Valparaiso, a team GW last met and downed at Madison Square Garden in the 2016 NIT Championship Game, a thriller of an offensive ballgame broke out. Both teams shot well over 50 percent from the field (GW .585, Valpo .536) but the Crusaders' 15-of-27 effort from three-point range was the differentiating factor in GW's 82-79 setback.
