Blackwall Hitch Brunch Review

Made-to-Order Omelette, Bacon, Country Sausage & Breakfast Potatoes

It takes something special to rouse me out of bed on an ice cold Sunday morning. Krispy Kreme doughnuts? Fat chance. Sausage McGriddles? Try again. How about Sunday Brunch at Blackwall Hitch in Old Town Alexandria? Now we're talking. Piping hot Maryland Crab Soup? Endless Peel & Eat Shrimp? Who wouldn't hop on two trains and a (free) trolley to get some of that?

The Skin of Our Teeth Theatre Review

Tonya Beckman & Lilian Oben (r) star in The Skin of Our Teeth (Photo: Daniel Schwartz)

Enjoy Yourselves

I was curious to see how the normally (and thankfully) playful Constellation Theatre Company would tackle Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth. The play's third act alone, can test the patience of any sane theatergoer, especially one who prefers humor over drama. Lucky for us, director Mary Hall Surface brings the funny... two superb acts of smart comedy that allow its stars to shine brightly, even in the face of oncoming catastrophes (ice age, flood, war.) Fear not tragedy lovers, there's still numerous veiled (and not-so-veiled) Biblical references to question the fate of mankind; but for those of us who like to sit back and be entertained, there's plenty to admire.

Oysters... Aphrodisiacs for Valentine's Day

From our friends at Oceanaire Seafood Room...

Oysters for Valentine’s Day at Oceanaire Oyster Bar

Oysters have been a reputed aphrodisiac at least since the Roman Empire and supposedly were regularly enjoyed as a virility-booster by Giacomo Girolamo Casanova. Casanova became best known for having seduced more than 100 women, described at length in his memoir. While this dubious achievement may or may not have been true, these bivalve mollusks have been found to have desire-inducing properties.

Silver Diner to Make First Major Menu Change in 10 Years

Silver Diner Rockville

From our friends at Silver Diner...

Executive Chef Ype Solicits Extensive Feedback from Customers to Shape the Summer Menu

Silver Diner’s Executive Chef Ype Von Hengst recently announced that he will undertake major menu revisions to the Silver Diner menu. “It was 10 years ago that we extensively changed menu items and implemented a large number of farm-to-table items. This year, we will shorten the menu to increase quality and add new items including more brunch items,” said Von Hengst. Silver Diner has made changes along the way including the addition of vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and lower calorie items but the entire menu has not been edited this drastically in 10 years. All of these changes have been a big success with customers, so Von Hengst is evaluating each current item on the menu and will remove those that are low sellers.

Phantom Thread Movie Review

Daniel Day-Lewis & Lesley Manville (r) star in Phantom Thread

Never Cursed

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love. With his latest film, Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running. Phantom Thread is Paul Thomas Anderson's eighth movie, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis.
