Life of the Party Movie Review

Melissa McCarthy stars in Life of the Party

Full Velocity

Rotten Tomatoes Plot: When her husband suddenly dumps her, longtime dedicated housewife Deanna (Melissa McCarthy) turns regret into re-set by going back to college... landing in the same class and school as her daughter, who's not entirely sold on the idea. Plunging headlong into the campus experience, the increasingly outspoken Deanna - now Dee Rock - embraces freedom, fun and frat boys on her own terms, finding her true self in a senior year no one ever expected. Directed by Ben Falcone.

Just how bad is Life of the Party? It references both Eat Pray Love and Oliver!, while shamelessly wasting the comedic talents of its star and co-writer (McCarthy) so her husband can have something to do. Poor Melissa: She deserves way better than a boring and predictable rehash of Back to School. All that's missing is Rodney Dangerfield, Sam Kinison and anything remotely funny (hint: sexual Dumbledore and vaGoogle doesn't count.) Dee Rock admits, "I wish I knew how to do this better." For starters, come up with something we haven't seen a thousand times before (and make us laugh.)

Grade: F
